Field Notes

Paper Was Always Better for Focus. Worse for Finding Things Again.

Every argument about handwriting versus typing ends in the same place. Paper wins while you write, and loses the moment you need the note back. MEMO's scanner app closes that gap with on-device OCR, so a line you wrote by hand three weeks ago is one keyword away.

MEMO. A 6-inch whiteboard, six cards and a magnetic pen, in an aluminium case the size of a wallet.

For as long as people have argued about handwriting versus typing, the case has split cleanly down the middle. Handwriting wins on the front end. It is slower, more focused and better for memory, because the hand makes the brain do more work. Typing wins on the back end. You can find what you typed. A keyword, a search bar, and the note from three weeks ago appears.

A handwritten note from three weeks ago is somewhere in a notebook, on a page you will never turn to again. So most people made the trade they had to. They typed the things they knew they would need later and gave up the focus, or they wrote by hand and quietly accepted that the notes, however well they stuck in the mind, were gone from the record.

The half that was missing

What changed is small and specific. The free MEMO scanner app does not just photograph your board. It runs OCR on your own device and turns the handwriting into searchable text. One tap, and the note behaves like a typed file: tagged, organised and findable by keyword across everything you have kept.

One tap to scan. The OCR runs on your device and the handwriting becomes searchable text.

This is not a small convenience dressed up as a big one. Searchability is the entire reason digital notes won the last two decades. It is why people left beautiful notebooks for ugly apps. Not because typing felt better, but because they could find things again.

Give searchability to paper and the original reason to leave paper quietly disappears.

Focus now, findability later

The sequence is the part worth being precise about. You still get the analog front end. A board with no feed, no notifications and nothing to tap, where writing by hand does what writing by hand does. The OCR happens afterwards, on a scan, when you want it. The focus is never taxed by the searchability. The searchability simply waits until you need it.

A student writes lecture notes by hand all term for the memory benefit, then searches the whole archive in seconds at exam time. Someone jots a decision in a meeting and finds it months later with a single word. The note was made the good way and kept the useful way.

Got Questions? We've Got Answers.

Yes. When you tap to scan a MEMO board into the free app (iOS and Android), on-device OCR reads your handwriting and makes it searchable text. You can tag and organize scans and search across all of them by keyword: the findability you'd get from a typed note, on something you wrote by hand. Your scans are stored on your device, never on our servers. With the optional MEMO AI Pro, a scan is sent briefly to Anthropic's Claude to be transcribed. By contract it is never used for training, and it is never stored on our servers. The app is entirely optional: most people use MEMO on paper and reach for the app only when a note's worth keeping.

MEMO holds up to 6 cards comfortably. The card slots feature RFID-blocking material to protect your contactless credit and debit cards from unauthorized scanning.

The pen attaches magnetically to MEMO, so it stays in place during everyday use. If you do need a replacement, you can order extra pens from our store. The pen is a standard 0.8mm whiteboard marker designed specifically for MEMO's surface.

We prepare your order in 1-2 working days. Delivery takes 8-10 days to the US, Europe, and Asia. Other destinations may take a bit longer. You'll receive a tracking number as soon as your order ships.

Absolutely! You have 14 days after receiving your MEMO to decide. If it's not for you, we'll guide you through a hassle-free return process. No hard feelings.

Yes! MEMO is designed for daily use. The whiteboard surface is made from high-quality material that withstands thousands of write-erase cycles. The outer casing is built to handle pocket carry, just like a premium wallet.
